What is a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) Calculator?
An SWP is the reverse of a SIP: instead of investing a fixed amount every month, you withdraw a fixed amount every month from a lumpsum you’ve already invested in a mutual fund — while the remaining balance continues to earn returns. It’s commonly used by retirees to create a regular monthly “income” from their investments.
This calculator shows how much you will withdraw in total, and what’s left in your investment at the end of the chosen period, based on your starting investment, monthly withdrawal, and expected rate of return.
How the Balance is Calculated
Each month: Balance = (Previous Balance × (1 + r)) − Monthly Withdrawal
Balance: Remaining investment value, recalculated every month
r: Effective monthly rate of return, derived as (1 + annual rate)1/12 − 1
Monthly Withdrawal: The fixed amount you withdraw each month
Note: Unlike SIP or Lumpsum growth, an SWP has no single formula because the balance changes every single month depending on both growth and withdrawal. The calculator simulates the investment month-by-month to arrive at the final numbers. If withdrawals exceed what the investment can sustain, the balance can reach zero before your chosen period ends.
Example: Starting with Rs. 10,00,000 and withdrawing Rs. 8,000 every month at an expected 8% annual return, after 10 years you would have withdrawn approximately Rs. 9,60,000 in total, with roughly Rs. 7,17,931 remaining in your investment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an SWP calculator?
It estimates how a mutual fund investment reduces over time when you withdraw a fixed amount regularly, known as a Systematic Withdrawal Plan.
How is SWP calculated?
Each period, the calculator subtracts your withdrawal amount from the fund balance and applies the expected rate of return to the remaining balance, repeating this for each period across your chosen tenure.
Can my SWP corpus run out before the end of my chosen period?
Yes, if your withdrawal amount is too high relative to your fund's balance and expected returns, the corpus can deplete before your intended withdrawal period ends.
How is SWP different from redeeming the entire investment at once?
SWP allows you to withdraw a fixed amount periodically while the remaining balance stays invested and continues to potentially grow, unlike a full redemption which converts the entire investment to cash immediately.
Is the SWP calculator result guaranteed?
No, it shows an estimate based on an assumed constant rate of return; actual mutual fund returns fluctuate with market performance and could cause your corpus to deplete faster or last longer than shown.
