What is a SIP Step-Up Calculator?

A Step-Up (or 'Top-Up') SIP lets you increase your monthly investment amount every year, usually in line with your rising income. This calculator shows how much faster your corpus grows when you increase your SIP annually instead of keeping it fixed.

Most people's income grows every year, but a regular SIP amount stays flat unless you manually increase it. A Step-Up SIP automates that increase, helping you reach your financial goals meaningfully faster without feeling a bigger pinch each year, since the increase is a small percentage of a now-larger income.

How the Future Value is Calculated

For each year y, Monthly SIPy = P0 × (1 + step-up%)y
Each month's contribution is then compounded forward using: Contribution × (1 + r)(remaining months)
P0: Your starting monthly SIP amount
step-up%The percentage by which your SIP increases every year
y: Year number (0 for year 1, 1 for year 2, and so on)
r: Effective monthly rate of return, derived as (1 + annual rate)1/12 − 1
Note: Unlike a regular SIP, there's no single closed-form formula for a step-up SIP because the invested amount changes every year. The calculator adds up the future value of every individual month's contribution across all years to arrive at the total.
Example: Starting at Rs. 10,000/month with a 10% annual step-up, at 12% expected returns over 15 years, grows to a noticeably larger corpus than a flat Rs. 10,000/month SIP over the same period — even though your early contributions are identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a SIP Step-Up calculator?
A SIP Step-Up calculator estimates the future value of a SIP where you increase your monthly investment amount by a fixed percentage every year, instead of investing the same amount throughout.
How is Step-Up SIP different from a regular SIP?
In a regular SIP, the monthly investment stays constant for the full tenure. In a Step-Up SIP, the monthly amount rises each year by a percentage you choose, letting your contributions grow in line with your income over time.
How is Step-Up SIP future value calculated?
The calculator splits your investment into yearly blocks. Each year's monthly amount is increased by your chosen step-up percentage, and the future value of each year's contributions is calculated separately using the SIP compounding formula, then added together to get the total.
What step-up percentage should I choose?
This depends on your expected income growth. Many investors use 5-10% per year as a starting point, roughly matching typical annual salary increments, and adjust it based on their own financial situation.
Is the Step-Up SIP calculator result guaranteed?
No. The calculator shows an estimate based on an assumed constant rate of return and a fixed step-up percentage. Actual mutual fund returns fluctuate with market performance and are not guaranteed, and your real income growth may differ from the step-up rate you enter.
